Fulgencio Yegros: Paraguay's First Leader
Early Life and Military CareerFulgencio Yegros was a prominent Paraguayan military and political figure, renowned for his role in shaping the nation's early history. Born into a military family in Asunción, he pursued a military education and joined the army.
Yegros played a pivotal role in several key campaigns, including the 1802 campaign against Portuguese forces and the 1807 battle against the British in Buenos Aires. His military prowess earned him a promotion to captaincy in 1810, followed by the governorship of the Misiones province.
Paraguay's Independence and First Junta
In 1811, Yegros commanded troops that successfully repelled an Argentine invasion, paving the way for Paraguay's independence declaration. Alongside Pedro Juan Caballero, he played a significant role in establishing the Supreme Junta, an executive council.
Yegros served as the president of the Junta from June 27, 1811, and founded the country's first military academy during his tenure.
Consulship and Francía's Rise to Power
A new constitution in 1813 introduced the office of two consuls, each serving for four-month terms. Yegros and José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia were elected as the first consuls.
During Yegros' consulship, Francía wielded significant influence on policy. Upon his second term as consul, Francía orchestrated a coup and seized absolute power. Yegros, more of a military man than a politician, retreated to his estate.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1820, Yegros participated in an unsuccessful plot to overthrow Francía, resulting in his imprisonment and subsequent death in prison.
