Early Life and Recognition
Garchen Rinpoche, a revered master of the Drikung Kagyu tradition, was born in Nangchen, Kham, Eastern Tibet, in 1936. Notably, his lineage can be traced back to Gardampa Chodenpa, a disciple of the great Jigten Sumgon. His recognition as the reincarnation of the Seventh Gar Tingley Yongkyab was made under the auspices of the King of Nangchen and confirmed by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Shiwei Lodro.
Monastic Training and Lineage
Under the guidance of Chime Dorje, Garchen Rinpoche received extensive teachings. At the age of thirteen, he received the transmissions of the Drikung Kagyu lineage from Lho Thubten Nyinpo Rinpoche of Lho Lungkar Monastery. Additionally, he received oral transmission, explanation, and initiation into Mahamudra and the Six Yogas of Naropa.
Nyingma Lineage and Secret Practice
Garchen Rinpoche's spiritual path took an intriguing turn when he met Khenpo Mungsel, a renowned student of the Nyingma master Khenpo Ngagchung. From Khenpo Mungsel, he received the Dzogchen teachings, which he practiced in secrecy. Impressed by Garchen Rinpoche's profound realizations, Khenpo Mungsel remarked, "He is an emanation of a bodhisattva."
Restoration of Monasteries and Lineage Transmissions
In recent years, Garchen Rinpoche has played a pivotal role in restoring numerous Drikung Kagyu monasteries in Eastern Tibet. Concurrently, he has continued to impart profound teachings of the lineage. Furthermore, he bestowed the initiation and transmission (lung) of Yamantaka (Tib. Jampey Shinye) upon His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, who in turn composed a long-life prayer in his honor. This prayer explicitly recognizes Garchen Rinpoche as a great yogi of our time in the Drikung Kagyu lineage.
