Biography of Jacques-Arsene d'Arsonval

Jacques-Arsene d'Arsonval was a French physiologist and physicist, and a member of the French Academy of Sciences. He was a pioneer in the field of electrotherapy, studying the medical applications of high-frequency currents. Throughout his career, d'Arsonval made significant contributions to various areas of electrical and medical research.

Early Life and Education

Jacques-Arsene d'Arsonval was born on June 8, 1851, in Saint-Germain-le-Belle, France, into an aristocratic family. He was one of nine children, with only two surviving into adulthood. D'Arsonval studied at the Imperial College in Limoges.

Collaboration with Renowned Scientists

After the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, d'Arsonval moved to Paris, where he became acquainted with the famous physiologist Claude Bernard and worked as his assistant until Bernard's death. He then served as an assistant to another renowned scientist, Charles Brown-Sequard. In 1882, Paul Bert, a physiologist who later became a minister, established the Laboratory of Biophysics and offered d'Arsonval the position of director.

Research and Discoveries

As the director of the Laboratory of Biophysics from 1882 to 1910, d'Arsonval conducted extensive research on the physiological effects of alternating currents, time-varying electric and magnetic fields, and induced currents through capacitive or magnetic coupling. In 1892, he discovered the therapeutic effects of high-frequency currents on skin diseases, which are now known as d'Arsonval currents. The medical terms "d'Arsonvalization" and "diathermy" also originated from this laboratory.

Contributions to Instrumentation

D'Arsonval's inventions included the development of the galvanometer, which used a coil wound with a thin wire that deflected in the presence of a permanent magnet. The angle of deflection was proportional to the current passing through the coil. This design served as the basis for most electro-mechanical measuring devices used today. He also co-invented the telephone with a detachable receiver, along with Bert.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1910, a new laboratory was specially constructed for d'Arsonval, where he served as director until his retirement in 1931. He received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to science in France, and was a member of several scientific societies and organizations. Jacques-Arsene d'Arsonval passed away in 1940 at an advanced age, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the field of electrical and medical research.
