Galina Beloglazova - Soviet Gymnast Extraordinaire

Galina Beloglazova, a high, beautiful blonde, was a leading Soviet gymnast in the early 1980s and one of the most charming and intelligent gymnasts of all time. She began practicing artistic gymnastics at the age of 6 under the guidance of Lyudmila Tikhomirova, who remained her coach throughout her entire athletic career. Galina made her debut on the international stage at the Interviden Cup in 1980 (East Germany), where she won first place as a junior.

Success on the European Stage

In 1982, Galina was part of the Soviet national team at the European Championships as a reserve. However, shortly before the performances, the coaches decided to move her to the main team. As a result, she achieved 7th place in the rope exercise and 8th place with the clubs. Beloglazova possessed all the qualities a gymnast could dream of - flexibility, agility, and mobility. Her active sports career coincided with the second "Golden Era" of Bulgarian artistic gymnastics. Galina was a constant rival of World Champions such as Anelia Ralenkova (1981), Diliana Georgieva (1983 and 1985), Bianka Panova (1987), and Lilia Ignatova (1983-1985). Even when the Bulgarians took the top spots, Beloglazova consistently won the favor of the audience, often being chosen as Miss Championship.

European Champion and Other Achievements

One of her highest sporting achievements was winning the title of Absolute European Champion in 1984. She was also a silver medalist in the all-around at the World Championships in 1983 and a world champion in ball and ribbon exercises. Galina was the winner of the "Rhythms of Art-84" tournament in 1984 and the champion of Europe in the ribbon exercise. She became the absolute champion of the USSR in 1985 and won several other titles, including the Cup of the USSR, the "Olympic Hopes-85" tournament, and the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR in the all-around. In 1986, she became the absolute champion of the USSR and won a bronze medal in the all-around at the Goodwill Games.

Life and Career Today

Galina Beloglazova, formerly the wife of basketball player Heino Enden, currently lives in Kyiv and works as a coach at the Deryugin School of Artistic Gymnastics.
