Early Life and Activism

Luis Corvalán Lepe was born into a humble family of farm laborers. Having experienced the harsh realities of poverty, he developed a strong affinity for the working class.

Anarcho-Syndicalist Beginnings

Corvalán initially embraced anarcho-syndicalism, influenced by the writings of Mikhail Bakunin and Peter Kropotkin. In 1925, he played a pivotal role in organizing the Union of Transport Workers, becoming its general secretary.

Joining the Communist Party

In 1927, Corvalán joined the Communist Party of Chile (PCCh). He proved to be a formidable organizer, mobilizing support for the party and its imprisoned leaders.

Political Engagement and Imprisonment

In 1929, Corvalán ascended to the position of secretary of organizational affairs in the PCCh's Valparaíso regional committee. In 1930, he was elected to the party's Central Committee. However, in 1932, following the collapse of the Socialist Republic of Chile, he was arrested and banished to a remote island in southern Chile.

Reemergence and Party Leadership

Undeterred by his imprisonment, Corvalán continued to lead the PCCh from exile. After his release in 1934, he played a key role in the party's organizational development and international relations.

General Secretary of the Communist Party

In 1949, Corvalán was elected general secretary of the PCCh, a position he held until 1958. Under his leadership, the party became a formidable force in Chilean politics, advocating for the rights of workers and the poor.
