Early Life and Education

Yuras Yustasovich Ermalavichyus was born on July 1, 1941, in a peasant family in the Varena District of southeastern Lithuania. He graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Vilnius University in 1964 and then worked for the regional newspaper in Jurbarks until 1968.

Political Career

Ermalavichyus joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1962 and pursued further studies at the Leningrad Higher Party School, graduating with honors in 1970. He earned a PhD in 1971 with a dissertation on the fight against political reaction from the church in Lithuania during the socialist era.

As a member of the Communist Party of Lithuania (CPL), Ermalavichyus rose through the ranks and became the secretary for ideology in 1990-91. He strongly opposed Lithuania's independence movement and played a pivotal role in the January 1991 Vilnius events, announcing the formation of the "Committee of National Salvation of Lithuania."

Prosecution and Imprisonment

Following the dissolution of the USSR, Ermalavichyus fled to Belarus and was later arrested and extradited to Lithuania in 1994. He faced trial in the Vilnius District Court for his alleged role in an attempted coup d'état and the subsequent Soviet military intervention that resulted in casualties.

In 1999, Ermalavichyus was convicted of public incitement to violence and sentenced to eight years in prison. The European Court of Human Rights upheld the verdict in 2008, rejecting claims that the defendants were convicted for their beliefs or that their actions were in accordance with the laws of the time.

Later Career

Ermalavichyus was released from prison in 2002 and has since worked as a professor at the Russian State University for the Humanities. He also serves as deputy chairman and secretary of the Council of the Union of Communist Parties - CPSU.

Intellectual Contributions

Ermalavichyus has authored numerous articles and books on political, historical, and futurist topics. His work focuses on the crisis of capitalism and the need for a socialist transformation of society. He argues that the capitalist system has exhausted its potential and led to widespread degradation in all areas of life. As a solution, he proposes a global reorganization on socialist principles.
