Early Life and Rule of Sangüesa

García II Jiménez, the son of Jimeno Garcés, became the ruler of Sangüesa after his father's death in 860. The extent of his control over Sangüesa remains unclear, as some historians suggest that it was a vassalage under the kings of Pamplona, while others argue for a more influential role for García, possibly as a "co-king."

Possible Reign in Pamplona

With limited historical records for Navarre in the 870s and early 880s, some historians propose that the king of Pamplona, García I Íñiguez, died in 870, leaving García II Jiménez to succeed him as the first king of the Jiménez dynasty. However, other scholars argue that García I may have lived until 882, making him the ruler who perished at the Battle of Aibar.

Alliance and Succession

García II Jiménez entered into an alliance with the sons of Musa II ibn Musa in 871 to challenge the Emir of Cordoba. In 880, Fortún Garcés, son of the former king of Pamplona, returned after 20 years of captivity in Cordoba. García II entrusted Fortún with the governorship of a portion of the kingdom.

Battle of Aibar and Legacy

In 882, at the Battle of Aibar, the army of Pamplona and its allies, led by either García II or García I, faced the forces of Muhammad I. The ruler of Pamplona fell in battle, allowing Fortún Garcés to reclaim the Navarrese throne.
