Early Life and Influences

Gary Francis Cain Cherone, known as "Mr. Rock Star," was born in Malden, Massachusetts, to a middle-class family. As a child, he was quiet and had passions for music and sports. He aspired to become a professional basketball player, but a serious knee injury crushed his dreams.

Formation of Adrenalin and The Dream

With his athletic aspirations dashed, Cherone turned to music. He formed Adrenalin, a hard rock band, with Paul Geary (drums) and Matt McKay in 1979. They changed their name to The Dream in 1981 and recorded a six-song album. In 1985, their amateur music video for "Mutha, Don't Wanna Go to School Today" won a TV show competition.

Extreme: A Fusion of Musical Styles

In 1985, Cherone met Nuno Bettencourt, the guitarist and bassist of Pat Badger. They formed Extreme, a band that blended pop, rock, metal, and hard rock. In 1989, they won the Boston Music Awards and signed with A&M Records. Their debut album, "Extreme," sold 250,000 copies.

Success with "Pornograffiti"

Extreme's second album, "Extreme II: Pornograffiti," was a critical and commercial success. The album's lyrical depth and impressive sales led to the recording of "More Than Words," an acoustic ballad that topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1991.

Career High with Extreme

Extreme went on to win numerous awards, including Grammys and American Music Awards. Their third album, "III Sides to Every Story," debuted at number two in the UK charts. The band's performance at Wembley Stadium was a career highlight for Cherone.

Departure from Van Halen and Tribe of Judah

In 1995, Extreme released "Waiting For The Punchline," which was less successful. Bettencourt left the band for a solo project, and Cherone joined Van Halen, replacing Sammy Hagar. Van Halen's album with Cherone, "Van Halen III," was a commercial disappointment. In 1999, Cherone left Van Halen on amicable terms.

After leaving Van Halen, Cherone returned to Boston and formed Tribe of Judah. The band released one album, "Exit Elvis," before disbanding.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Extreme Reunion

Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, and Michael Anthony acknowledged Cherone's contributions to the band. In 2004, Extreme reunited for a tour, which led to the release of a new album, "Saudades de Rock," in 2008.
