Early Career and Rise to Prominence

Hovhannisyan began his professional football career in 1998 with FC Dvin Artashat. He made an immediate impact, scoring 11 goals and finishing 5th in the Armenian Premier League scoring charts.

Success with FC Ararat Yerevan

In 1999, Hovhannisyan joined FC Ararat, where he enjoyed significant success. The team won the Armenian Cup in 2000, with Hovhannisyan scoring two goals in the final against FC Shirak. He also helped the club win its second Armenian Premier League title in 2001, finishing as the league's second-highest goalscorer with 16 goals.

Stint in Russia and Return to Armenia

Hovhannisyan briefly joined Russian club FC Kuban Krasnodar in 2002 but returned to Armenia after failing to secure a regular starting position. He played for FC Spartak Yerevan and FC Banants, winning a third bronze medal with the latter.

Later Career and International Appearances

Hovhannisyan played for FC Mika, FC Ulisses, and FC Kilikia in subsequent seasons. From 1998 to 2001, he represented the Armenian national team, making five appearances and scoring one goal. His only goal for his country came in a 2002 World Cup qualifier against Norway.
