Biography of Geir H. Haarde
Geir H. Haarde, a renowned politician and public figure in Iceland, was appointed as the Prime Minister of this small island nation in June 2006. Born in Reykjavik in 1951, Haarde embarked on his academic journey in the United States, specializing in economics and international relations, obtaining multiple degrees from various universities between 1973 and 1977.
After completing his studies, Haarde worked as an economist at the Central Bank of Iceland from 1977 to 1987. Later, he became an advisor to the Ministry of Finance in the country. In 1987, Haarde's political career took off as he became a member of the Althing, the Icelandic Parliament, a position he still holds today.
In 1988, Haarde assumed leadership of the Icelandic Inter-Parliamentary Union and served as its head until 1998. Throughout his political career, Haarde held various positions, but his peak came in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 1998, he became the Minister of Finance, a role he held until 2005. Around the same time, he also became the Vice Chairman of the Independence Party (IP), one of the main political forces in the country. In 2005, he took on the roles of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the IP.
