Early Life and Education

Li Andersson was born in Turku, Finland, on May 13, 1987. Her parents, Jaan-Erik Andersson and Siv Skogman, are both Swedish-speaking Finns. She attended the University of Turku and earned a master's degree in political science in 2010. Her studies focused on international law, human rights, and refugee issues. Additionally, she studied Russian language and culture.

Political Activism and Rise to Prominence

At the age of 16, Andersson joined the Left Alliance Youth Organization after being inspired by the writings of Paavo Arhinmäki, then the leader of the organization. In 2011, she became the chairperson of the Left Alliance Youth Organization.

In the 2015 parliamentary elections, Andersson was elected as a member of parliament (MP) representing the Varsinais-Suomi constituency. Following the elections, she was elected as the deputy chair of the Left Alliance parliamentary group. She served on the parliamentary committee for cultural affairs.

Leader of the Left Alliance

In February 2016, Andersson announced her candidacy for the chairmanship of the Left Alliance. She received 61.85% of the votes in the unofficial election on June 6, 2016, leading to the withdrawal of other candidates. At the party congress held in Oulu on June 11, 2016, Andersson was elected as the party's leader, succeeding Paavo Arhinmäki. Under Andersson's leadership, the Left Alliance's goal became the transformation of Finland into "a society where human needs and rights are valued above money."

Ministerial Career

On June 6, 2019, Andersson was appointed Minister of Education in the Rinne Cabinet. She retained this position in the Marin Cabinet, which was formed on December 10, 2019. In December 2020, Andersson took maternity leave after giving birth to a daughter in January 2021. She returned to the government from leave on June 29, 2021.

Political Views

Andersson identifies as a socialist and believes that tensions between labor and capital persist. She also identifies as a Marxist with freedom as her guiding value. According to her, a key difference between the Left Alliance and the Greens lies in their relationship with the trade union movement. Andersson supports mandatory military service for women and increased crisis response capabilities for the Defense Forces.

Personal Life

Andersson is in a common-law relationship with Juha Pursiainen, a former hockey player. Their daughter was born in January 2021.
