Geela Bezhuashvili: A Distinguished Diplomat and Intelligence Chief
Early Life and EducationBorn in Manglisi, Georgia, in 1967, Geela Bezhuashvili embarked on a path of education that laid the foundation for his distinguished career. Graduating from the Kyiv Institute of International Relations with a degree in international law (1991), he pursued a master's degree from the University of Texas School of Law (1997). His academic journey extended to the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (2003), and various specialized courses in law and public administration at universities in Europe and the United States.
Early Career in Diplomacy
Bezhuashvili's career began at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia (1991-1993), where he held various positions in the International Law Department. His diplomatic service continued with his appointment as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Kazakhstan (1993-1996).
International Law and Council of Europe Engagement
Returning to Georgia, Bezhuashvili became Director of the International Law Department at the Foreign Ministry (1997-2000). During this time, he led a working group on Georgia's membership in the Council of Europe (1997-1999). As an expert for various Council of Europe committees, he actively collaborated with European structures (1998-2000).
Involvement in Defense and National Security
Bezhuashvili's career transitioned into defense and national security in 2000. He served as Deputy Minister of Defense (2000-2004) and Minister of Defense (February-June 2004). Subsequently, he became Secretary of the National Security Council (June 2004).
Foreign Minister of Georgia
On October 19, 2005, Bezhuashvili was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. This role, accompanied by the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, brought him into close circles with President Mikheil Saakashvili. Bezhuashvili played a pivotal role in advancing Georgia's foreign policy agenda.
Head of the Intelligence Department
On January 24, 2008, Bezhuashvili left the government to pursue business opportunities. However, on January 31, 2008, he was appointed Head of the Intelligence Department, which had been realigned under President Saakashvili's direct supervision.
Academic Contributions and Personal Life
Bezhuashvili is an accomplished author in the field of international law, with several publications and scholarly works to his name. He is married and has two sons.
