Early Life and Education
Vasil Evstatiev Aprilov was born on July 21, 1789, in the town of Gabrovo, Bulgaria, then under Ottoman rule. His family were merchants, and Aprilov received his primary education in Austria at the Kronstadt School. He briefly studied medicine at the University of Vienna before moving to Odessa, Ukraine, in 1811 to work in the commercial sector with his brother.
National Awakening
Drawn to the plight of his people, Aprilov was inspired by Yuri Venelin's book "Ancient and Present Bulgarians" (1829). He became a leading figure in the Bulgarian National Revival, dedicating himself to the education and cultural development of his countrymen. Aprilov published several books in Ukrainian, including "Bulgarian Scholars, or to Which Slavic Tribe Does the Cyrillic Alphabet Belong?" and "Dawn of New Bulgarian Education."
Patron of Education
In Odessa, Aprilov established a society dedicated to supporting Bulgarians. This society published textbooks, established 12 schools in Bulgaria modeled after the one founded in Gabrovo, and raised approximately 60,000 rubles for their upkeep. Aprilov's efforts greatly contributed to the spread of literacy and education among Bulgarians.
Final Days and Legacy
Vasil Aprilov died suddenly on October 2, 1847, in Galati, Romania, while traveling from Bulgaria to Odessa. He was initially buried in Galati but was later reinterred in the courtyard of the Aprilov School in Gabrovo, built with funds bequeathed by the philanthropist. A monument to Aprilov was erected in front of the school in 1935, commemorating his invaluable contributions to Bulgarian education and national awakening.
