Political and Civic Career

Gennady Leonidovich Trukhanov is a Ukrainian politician who has served as the Mayor of Odessa since May 27, 2014. He was also a member of the Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) during the 7th convocation.

Early Life and Education

Trukhanov was born on January 17, 1965, in Odessa, Ukraine. He attended Odessa Secondary School No. 4 and graduated from the Frunze Odessa Higher Artillery Command School in 1986 with a degree in the operation of artillery equipment and weapons.

Military Service

From 1986 to 1992, Trukhanov served in the North Caucasus Military District of the Soviet Union, rising from the rank of lieutenant to captain. In 1992, he resigned from the military due to reductions and personal reasons.

Business and Political Activities

After leaving the military, Trukhanov worked as the director of the security firm "Kapitan" in 1993. He later became the president of the Ukrainian National Federation of Thai Boxing in 1995 and the assistant to the representative of the president of the oil company Lukoil in Ukraine for security issues in 2000. From 2004 to 2007, he worked in the apparatus of the Verkhovna Rada.

Trukhanov's political career began in 2005 when he was elected as a deputy to the Odessa City Council. He was re-elected in 2006 and became the head of the Standing Commission on Youth and Sports. In 2008, he was appointed as the Regional Representative of the State Committee of Ukraine for Veterans' Affairs in the Odessa region. From 2010 to 2012, he headed the Party of Regions faction in the Odessa City Council.

In 2012, Trukhanov was elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Party of Regions in the 136th single-member electoral district. After the victory of the Euromaidan protests in 2014, he left the Party of Regions faction and joined the "Economic Development" deputy group.

Mayor of Odessa

On May 25, 2014, Trukhanov won the extraordinary mayoral election in Odessa, securing 43.49% of the votes. He was sworn in on May 27, 2014, and assumed the duties of mayor, despite the fact that he remained a member of the Verkhovna Rada until its dissolution in November 2014.

Trukhanov was re-elected as mayor in the local elections on October 25, 2015, with 52.2% of the votes. In 2018, he was detained by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine but was released on bail the next day. In 2019, he became one of the two co-chairs of the new political party "Trust in Deeds."

Controversies

Trukhanov has been involved in several controversies during his tenure as mayor. In 2016, he was accused of being involved in a corruption scandal related to the Panama Papers leak, which revealed that he owned several offshore companies in the Virgin Islands. The SBU launched an investigation but found no evidence to confirm the allegations.

In 2022, Trukhanov was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement and corruption, but he was released on bail shortly after. The investigation into his alleged crimes is ongoing.

Personal Life

Trukhanov is married and has two daughters, Ekaterina and Alisa.
