Childhood and Education
Gennady Petrovich Kotelnikov was born on January 11, 1949, in the village of Leshchinovo, Penza Oblast, Russia. His father, Petr Alexandrovich Kotelnikov, was born in 1925, and his mother, Maria Ivanovna Pervasova, was born in 1931.
In 1972, Kotelnikov graduated from the Medical Faculty of the Kuibyshev Medical Institute named after D.I. Ulyanov. He worked as a clinical intern in the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics until 1974, when he entered graduate school.
Academic Career
From 1977 to 1985, Kotelnikov was an assistant in the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics at the Kuibyshev Medical Institute, where he also headed the clinical department. From 1980 to 1989, he led the Medical Faculty.
In 1989, Kotelnikov became a professor in the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics, and Extreme Surgery at the Samara State Medical University. He has been the head of the department since 2003. Additionally, he served as Pro-Rector for Academic Affairs from 1989 to 1998 and has been the Rector of the Samara State Medical University since 1998.
Scientific Contributions
Kotelnikov's primary research interests lie in the field of traumatology and orthopedics. He has made significant contributions to the study of the pathogenesis and diagnosis of degenerative-destructive diseases of the musculoskeletal system. He has proposed six innovative surgical treatments for osteoarthritis of large joints, spondylosis of the spine, and Bechterew's disease.
Kotelnikov pioneered the use of mathematical modeling and multivariate analysis in traumatology and orthopedics. He has developed 16 unique methods for treating post-traumatic joint instability, which are protected by patents and author's certificates.
He has also made significant advancements in hyperbaric oxygen therapy and tendon-muscle transplantation. For his work on the latter, Kotelnikov received the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 1997.
Geriatrics and Gerontology
In recent years, Kotelnikov has focused on geriatrics and gerontology. He played a key role in the establishment of the first International Center for Elderly Problems in Samara and organized the Department of Geriatrics at Samara State Medical University.

Leadership and Administration
Kotelnikov has played a significant role in the organization of medical science and higher education in Russia. He has created a school of scientific and administrative professionals, including professors, associate professors, deans, and chief physicians of major medical institutions.
He has been involved in numerous national and international conferences and has served as Vice-President of the Association of Traumatologists and Orthopedists of Russia. He is also a member of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT).
Personal Life
Kotelnikov is married to Taisiya Mikhailovna Kotelnikova, a teacher. They have a son, Mikhail Gennadievich Kotelnikov, who is a doctor and a Candidate of Medical Sciences.
He enjoys reading and playing sports, particularly tennis and football. He currently resides in Samara, Russia.
