Victor Kalnberzs: A Pioneer in Trauma and Orthopedics
Victor Konstantinovich Kalnberzs (July 2, 1928 – present) is a renowned Latvian physician and scientist known for his pioneering work in trauma and orthopedics. He has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Hero of Socialist Labour (1988), State Prize of the USSR (1986), State Prize of Latvia (1970), and the title of Merited Doctor of Latvia (1966).
Early Life and Education
Victor Kalnberzs was born in Moscow to Konstantin Ottovich and Mil'da Ekabovna Kalnberzs, both physicians. He attended first grade in Kyzyl, the capital of the Tuvan People's Republic, where his parents had been sent for medical practice. In 1936, the family returned to Moscow, and in 1941, they moved to Riga. Kalnberzs graduated from high school in Moscow with a gold medal in 1945.
In autumn 1945, he entered the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Latvia, graduating with honors as a physician in 1951. He worked as a research associate at the Riga Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics from 1951 to 1955 and as an assistant professor at the Department of Hospital Surgery, Trauma, Orthopedics, and Military Field Surgery at the Riga Medical Institute (RMI) from 1955 to 1959.
Leadership and Innovations
In 1959, Victor Kalnberzs became the head of the Latvian Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics, a position he held for 35 years. He also served as the Head of the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics, and Military Field Surgery at the RMI (later the Latvian Medical Academy) from 1960 to 1994 and as the Chief Trauma and Orthopedic Surgeon of the Latvian Ministry of Health from 1962 to 1994. Currently, he holds the position of Professor at the Department of Orthopedics at the Latvian Medical Academy.
Kalnberzs is known for his groundbreaking work in gender reassignment surgery. In 1970, he performed the first such operation in the USSR, which was the fifth in the world but the first to achieve complete surgical outcomes. Despite receiving an informal reprimand from the Minister of Health of the USSR, Kalnberzs continued to research and refine the procedure, breaking the silence around it after 20 years.
He also dedicated significant effort to the development of phalloendoprostheses for the treatment of impotence. In 1963, he successfully used this method for the first time in Latvia. The unique design of his phalloendoprostheses allowed for reliable fixation in the tissues of the penis and provided minimal invasiveness, permanent passive erection, and a desired shape and length. Kalnberzs's phalloendoprostheses are now patented in numerous countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Germany, Sweden, and Latvia.
International Collaboration and Recognition
Kalnberzs has collaborated with medical institutions in various countries, participating in the recovery of Soviet cosmonauts and serving as a consultant trauma surgeon for the USSR at the Tokyo, Munich, Moscow, and Montreal Olympics. He has also worked in England, Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Bulgaria, Venezuela, Germany, Czechoslovakia, the former USSR republics, and many other nations.
His contributions to the field of medicine have earned him numerous awards, including 86 inventions, over 260 scientific works, 23 patents, and 2 textbooks: "Surgical Diseases" (1974) and "Differential Diagnosis and Practice of the District Doctor" (1985).
