A British Man's Agonizing Ordeal after an Ant Bite
Encounter with a Hidden Danger74-year-old Jeff Stevens, a former mayor and active politician, had a harrowing experience at a Christmas market in Matlock, Derbyshire, in 2014. While assisting with the setup, Stevens stumbled upon an ant colony and was bitten on his leg and foot. Despite initial treatment with antibiotics, his swollen leg reappeared with intense swelling and high fever.

Persistent Symptoms and a Life-Threatening Diagnosis
For two years, Stevens endured excruciating pain until doctors diagnosed him with necrotizing fasciitis, a life-threatening infection of the skin and tissue. The infection was traced back to the ant bite, likely due to dormant venom beneath his skin. Symptoms worsened, with his leg nearly doubling in size and his foot swelling to the point of immobility.

Urgent Treatment and High-Level Concern
Stevens was rushed back to Chesterfield Royal Hospital, where tests revealed severe inflammation and ulceration of the skin. Blood tests showed high levels of formic acid, indicating significant venom in his bloodstream. Doctors feared that the venom could damage internal organs.

A Long Road to Recovery
After extensive blood tests and a referral to specialists in Manchester, a treatment plan was developed. Stevens underwent extensive antibiotics and surgery, and finally made a full recovery after nearly two years. The ordeal coincided with an election, during which Stevens was unable to campaign and lost his seat.
A Cautionary Tale
While some ant species in the UK bite, they are generally harmless. However, ant bites can introduce bacteria into the bloodstream, leading to infections. Invasive ant species, such as the Argentine ant from South America, pose a greater risk, as they are aggressive and can spread diseases like salmonella.
