Diagnosis and Treatment

In 2012, after noticing a lump in her breast, Karin Nowackey received a diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma. The news was a shock, but her family history of cancer prepared her for the challenges ahead. After considering a mastectomy, she opted to continue with her planned trip to Mexico before undergoing surgery.

Seeking Alternative Treatment

After her mastectomy, Nowackey consulted with doctors at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) who provided her with a comprehensive treatment plan. Six rounds of chemotherapy, naturopathy, and supplements complemented her cancer treatment.

The Onset of Lymphedema

Following her treatment, Nowackey developed lymphedema, a common side effect of mastectomy. Despite using gloves, specialized wraps, and compression garments, her symptoms persisted, causing pain and discomfort.

Finding Relief through Lymph Node Transfer

Through discussions with Dr. Aaron Peltier, Nowackey learned about lymph node transfer, a microsurgical procedure that involves moving lymph nodes from one area to another. She underwent the surgery, which successfully reduced her lymphedema.

Breast Reconstruction

Dr. Peltier also performed a breast reconstruction using the DIEP flap technique, where abdominal tissue was used to rebuild Nowackey's breast. Lymph nodes were transplanted to her armpit from her abdomen and groin.

Recovery and Return to Normalcy

Within days of her lymph node transfer surgery, Nowackey regained mobility in her hand and experienced a significant reduction in swelling. Her pain subsided, and she was able to return to work within four weeks.

The Power of Choice and Knowledge

Nowackey emphasizes the importance of seeking diverse treatment options and educating oneself about her condition. Her journey to recovery was aided by her determination to learn more and not settle for a single consultation.

A Renewed Life

Today, Nowackey enjoys playing with her grandchildren, playing instruments in her basement studio, and interacting with her colleagues at work. She is grateful for the care she received at CTCA and the support of her family and friends. Her experience has inspired her to help others in similar situations.
