Carl Friedrich Gottlieb Armbrust

Early Life and Education

Carl Friedrich Gottlieb Armbrust was born in Hamburg, Germany, the son of Karl Armbrust. His early life and education are not fully documented, but it is believed that he received musical training at a young age.

Musical Career

Organist and Church Musician

Armbrust served as the organist of St. Peter's Church in Hamburg, a position that would later be inherited by his son. He was also active in the Hamburg Bach Society, where he led the choir in performances of Johann Sebastian Bach's choral music.

Controversial Arrangements

Armbrust's arrangements of Bach's music were controversial, leading to two critical pamphlets by Carl Grädener. In a letter to Grädener, Johannes Brahms expressed his support for the criticism.

Collaboration with Brahms

Despite the controversy surrounding his arrangements, Armbrust collaborated with Brahms as the accompanist for the latter's women's choir. However, Brahms was not fully satisfied with Armbrust's playing.

Organ Compositions

Armbrust also composed several works for organ. Unfortunately, few of these compositions have survived to the present day.

Legacy

The Armbrusts, both father and son, left a lasting legacy in Hamburg. A street in the city, Armbruststraße, is named in their honor.
