Early Life and EducationFranco Abbiati, an eminent Italian musicologist and music critic, was born in Verona, Italy. He pursued his education at the Turin Conservatory, graduating in 1929 with a diploma in composition. During his studies, he delved into musicology under the tutelage of renowned musicologist Gaetano Cesari.
Career in Music Criticism
After graduating from the conservatory, Abbiati embarked on his career in music criticism. Initially, he worked for the newspaper "Secolo sera." In 1934, he became the music critic for the esteemed "Corriere della Sera" newspaper, succeeding his former mentor, Gaetano Cesari. Abbiati held this position until 1973, showcasing his profound knowledge and insightful perspective on the music world.
Research and Publications
Abbiati's research and publications played a significant role in shaping musical thinking and understanding. He was heavily involved in the reassessment of Italian musical drama. Between 1949 and 1963, he edited the monthly journal "La Scala," where he published articles on the history of Italian opera, drawing upon previously unpublished documents and archival materials.
One of Abbiati's most notable works is his four-volume study on Giuseppe Verdi, published in London in 1959. This groundbreaking work introduced new archival discoveries, enriching the field of Verdi scholarship. His other important publications include "Scritti inediti di Gaetano Cesari," "Storia della musica" (a five-volume history of music), "Guida al Peter Grimes di Britten," and a biography of Arnold Schoenberg.
Legacy
Franco Abbiati passed away in Bergamo on January 22, 1981. In his honor, the Italian Music Critics Association established the annual "Premio Franco Abbiati della Critica Musicale Italiana" award in 1980. The award recognizes exceptional achievements in various aspects of music, including opera, classical music, and contemporary compositions.
