Georg Goltermann: German Cellist, Composer, and Conductor
Early Life and EducationGeorg Goltermann was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1824. He began his musical studies with his father, Heinrich Friedrich Goltermann, an organist. Goltermann later studied with August Christian Prell and then at the Munich Conservatory from 1847 to 1849 under Josef Menter. He also studied composition with Ignaz Lachner.
Career as a Soloist and Composer
In the 1850s, Goltermann embarked on a career as a concert cellist, while also composing his own works. His symphony premiered in Leipzig in 1851.
Appointment as Conductor
In 1852, Goltermann became the Kapellmeister in Würzburg. In 1853, he moved to Frankfurt, where he served as a conductor at the Frankfurt City Theater until his death in 1898. He became the theater's musical director in 1874.
Musical Legacy
Goltermann is best known for his compositions for cello, particularly his eight concertos. His first concerto, Op. 14, gained widespread recognition, especially its slow movement, the Cantilena. His fourth concerto was considered more accessible and remains popular today.
Goltermann's other compositions include arrangements of works by other composers, such as Edvard Grieg's pieces for cello and piano. Some of his smaller pieces are still used for pedagogical purposes.
