Biography of George Abbott

George Abbott, an American director, playwright, and producer of "live," commercial films, was born in Forestville, New York, USA. He began his career as an actor in 1913 but later turned his focus to writing and producing plays on Broadway.

Career

Abbott wrote numerous plays and produced them on Broadway. Some of his plays were even adapted for the screen. With the advent of sound in cinema, he moved to Hollywood and co-wrote the screenplay for the film "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930). He also directed several films, usually based on his own scripts.

However, in 1931, Abbott returned to the theater and only directed two more films, both of which were adaptations of theatrical musicals. He also worked as a producer, and many of his productions became hits.

Later Years

In 1983, at the age of 95, Abbott directed and co-produced the revival of the Broadway musical "On Your Toes." Remarkably, in 1993, at the age of 105, he participated in the celebrations commemorating the 100th anniversary of Broadway. When asked about himself, Abbott admitted, "One of my greatest shortcomings as a director has always been incurable impatience." He also said, "Many great minds have made a lot of foolish mistakes because their emotions interfered with their thinking."

Abbott wrote an autobiography titled "Mr. Abbott," which was published in 1963.
