Biography of George Leighton Dahl

George Leighton Dahl, a renowned American architect of the 20th century, lived and worked in Dallas, Texas. His most notable works include the Art Deco constructions in Dallas' Park and the Texas Centennial Exhibition, which was built in honor of Texas' centenary of independence from Mexico.

Early Life and Education

George Leighton Dahl was born on May 11, 1894, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Olaf G. and Laura (Olsen) Dahl, Norwegian immigrants. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Humanities from Harvard University in 1923. Dahl then spent two years in Italy as a fellow of The American Academy in Rome.

Architectural Career

In 1926, Dahl began working for Herbert M. Greene's company in Dallas, Texas. He became a partner of the firm in 1928, leading to the inclusion of his surname in its name. In 1943, George Dahl founded his own company, 'George Leighton Dahl, Architects and Engineers, Incorporated'. He was one of the first architects in Texas to have a national practice and was a pioneer of the 'fast-track' design system, allowing projects to commence before their development was complete. After retiring in 1973, Dahl prepared around 3,000 projects worth approximately $3 billion for implementation across the country.

Personal Life and Legacy

George Dahl was married twice. In 1921, he married Lillie E. Olsen, who gave birth to their daughter. In 1978, the architect married Joan Renfro. He passed away from cancer on July 18, 1987, at the age of 93, in his Dallas home. Dahl's contributions to architecture continue to inspire and his numerous projects have left a lasting impact throughout the United States.
