Early Life and Family

George Hoyningen-Huene was born in 1900 in St. Petersburg, Russia, into the aristocratic Hoyningen-Huene family. His father, Baron Barthold Theodor Hermann von Hoyningen-Huene, was a Russian baron, while his American mother, Emily Anne 'Nan' Lothrop, was the daughter of George Van Ness Lothrop, an American minister. He had two sisters, Helen de Huene and Elizabeth, who both became successful fashion designers.

Emigration and Early Career

Following the Russian Revolution, the Hoyningen-Huene family fled to London and then Paris. George began his career in fashion photography in 1925 as a photo editor for French 'Vogue'. In 1931, he met Horst P. Horst, who became his lover, model, and collaborator.

Success in England and New York

In 1931, Hoyningen-Huene and Horst traveled to England and established connections with British 'Vogue'. In 1935, Hoyningen-Huene moved to New York City, where he contributed to 'Harper's Bazaar'.

Books and Art Photography

In addition to fashion photography, Hoyningen-Huene became known for his collaborations on books about Egyptian and Greek art. He provided photographs for archaeologists and art historians.

Hollywood Glamor
