Byzantine Writer of the 15th Century
Georgios Kodinos was a Byzantine writer who lived in the 15th century. He held the high-ranking position of Kouropalates in the imperial palace of Constantinople.
Attributed Works
Kodinos' name is associated with two treatises:- Patria Konstantinupoleos: A description of the city of Constantinople, its history, and its monuments.
- On Offices: A work discussing the administrative offices and ceremonies of the Byzantine court.
These treatises were previously attributed to a fictional character named Pseudo-Kodinos.
Chronographia
Kodinos is also believed to have written a chronographia, or brief chronicle, covering the period from the creation of the world to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. This chronicle, which refers to the Ottomans as "Hagarenes," is considered to be of limited historical value.
Publication and Dissemination
Kodinos' works were included in Johann Becker's collection of Byzantine historical sources (1837-1839) and Abbé Migne's "Patrologia Graeca" (Volume 157).
