Early Life and Education

George Monbiot was born and raised in South Oxfordshire, England. His affluent upbringing included a large country house and his father's involvement as a businessman and Conservative Party trade and industry spokesman. Monbiot attended a private school in Buckinghamshire and later earned an open scholarship to Brasenose College, Oxford.

Career in Journalism

After graduating, Monbiot worked as a producer in the natural history division of the BBC, specializing in environmental programming. He later moved to the international department as a news anchor and producer. However, he eventually quit to pursue research and write his first book.

Activism and Environmentalism

Monbiot's travels throughout Indonesia, Brazil, and East Africa led him to be labeled persona non grata in several countries and sentenced to life in prison in absentia in Indonesia. During his expeditions, he faced shootings, beatings, a shipwrecking, and a coma induced by hornet bites. After a near-death experience from cerebral malaria in Kenya, Monbiot returned to the UK.

In recent years, Monbiot has become a vocal advocate for radical measures to combat global warming. He believes that climate change is the "moral issue of the 21st century" and has proposed drastic policies, such as personal carbon caps, new building regulations, bans on wasteful technologies, and the expansion of public transportation.

Political Involvement

Monbiot co-founded the Respect Party but withdrew his support when the organization ran candidates against the Green Party in the European Parliament elections. He has since expressed support for Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats.

The "Arrest Blair" Campaign

In 2010, Monbiot launched the ArrestBlair.org website, offering a reward to anyone who attempted to peacefully arrest former British Prime Minister Tony Blair for alleged war crimes and human rights violations.

Later Life and Legacy

Monbiot currently resides in Wales and continues to write and advocate for environmental and political causes. He remains a prolific journalist, writing a weekly column for The Guardian and publishing several books on topics including corporate power and global justice.
