Early Life and Education
George Rawlinson was born in Chadlington, Oxfordshire, to Abram Tyzack Rawlinson and the younger brother of the renowned Assyriologist Sir Henry Rawlinson. He received his education at Ealing School.
Oxford Career
In 1838, Rawlinson graduated with a First in Literae Humaniores from Trinity College, Oxford University. Two years later, he was elected to a fellowship at Exeter College, where he served as tutor and lecturer from 1842 to 1846. He was ordained in 1841 and served as vicar at Merton, Oxfordshire, from 1846 to 1847. In 1859, he became Bampton Lecturer, and from 1861 to 1889, he held the Camden Professorship of Ancient History.
Cricket and Other Pursuits
During his early years at Oxford, Rawlinson played cricket for the university, participating in five matches between 1836 and 1839 that are now considered first-class. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1869.
Ecclesiastical Appointments
In 1872, Rawlinson was appointed Canon of Canterbury, and in 1888, he became Rector of the wealthy city parish of All Hallows-on-the-Wall. In 1873, he was appointed Proctor in Convocation for the Chapter of Canterbury.
Personal Life
In 1846, Rawlinson married Louisa Chrmseide, the daughter of Sir Robert Alexander Chrmseide. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1896.
Later Years and Legacy
Canon Rawlinson died at his residence within the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral on October 6, 1902. He is remembered as a distinguished scholar, historian, and Christian theologian who made significant contributions to the understanding of ancient history.
