Early Life and Education
Georg Spalatin was born in Spalt, Bavaria, in 1484. He studied at the University of Erfurt alongside Martin Luther, focusing on humanist and philosophical subjects.
Service to the Saxon Court
In 1509, Spalatin became the tutor of Johann Friedrich, the future Elector of Saxony. In 1514, Elector Frederick the Wise appointed him as his court chaplain and later as his private secretary. Spalatin became the Elector's most trusted advisor, accompanying him to numerous imperial diets. He served as the primary intermediary between Frederick and Luther.
Involvement in the Reformation
Spalatin played a crucial role in the Lutheran Reformation. He was tasked with finding a safe haven for Luther after the Edict of Worms was issued. Under the reign of Elector Johann the Constant, Spalatin continued to be highly valued and was appointed court canon in Altenburg in 1525.
Ecclesiastical Organization
From 1527 to 1542, Spalatin worked tirelessly to establish the Evangelical Church in the Saxon lands. He authored biographies of Frederick the Wise and Johann the Constant, as well as the "Christian Register of Religion or Saxony." His works provided valuable insights into the era of the Reformation and the papacy.
