Cardinal Georges d'Amboise
Georges d'Amboise was a prominent French cardinal and minister during the reign of Louis XII of France.
Early Life and Ecclesiastical Career
Born into a noble family in 1460, Amboise quickly rose through the ranks of the church. At the age of 14, he was named Bishop of Montauban and became a royal chaplain to Louis XI. During the reign of Charles VIII, he became the Archbishop of Narbonne and then the Archbishop of Rouen in 1493.
As Minister to Louis XII
In 1498, Amboise was appointed as minister to Louis XII. He became the king's sole advisor and effectively governed both the monarchy and the court. In the same year, Pope Alexander VI elevated him to the rank of cardinal and appointed him as papal legate to France.
Attempts to Reform the Papacy
Amboise's tenure as papal legate was marked by an attempt to reform the Franciscan and Dominican monastic orders. After the death of Alexander VI, he unsuccessfully sought to be elected pope.
Conflict with the Papacy
The papacies of Pius III and Julius II, who were elected instead of Amboise, saw him become a vocal opponent. He sowed discord between the French church and the Roman Curia. Amboise organized a council that initially convened in Pisa and later moved to Milan and Lyons.
Decline and Death
However, the failures of French troops in Italy and their loss of influence undermined Amboise's plans. He died shortly after in Lyons in 1510.
