Biography of Georges André

Georges André was a French athlete and a medalist at the Summer Olympics. Born in Paris, France, André participated in two disciplines at the 1908 Games in London. He shared second place in the high jump and achieved fifth position in the standing high jump. At the following Olympics in 1912 in Stockholm, André competed in six disciplines. He finished seventh in the standing high jump, fourteenth in the standing long jump, seventeenth in the decathlon, twenty-second in the pentathlon, twenty-third in the high jump, and reached the semifinals in the 110m hurdles.

During World War I, André served in the military and was captured as a prisoner of war. After six escape attempts, he successfully returned to his troops and became a military pilot. After the war, André participated in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. He won a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay, finished fourth in the 400m hurdles, and reached the semifinals in the 400m race.

André made the decision to compete in the next Olympics, which took place in his hometown of Paris in 1924. He was chosen to deliver the Olympic oath during the opening ceremony of the Games. The athlete repeated his previous success and once again finished fourth in the 400m hurdles. With the outbreak of World War II, André aspired to become a pilot again, but due to his age, he served in the infantry and tragically died in battle near Tunis.
