Family Legacy and Political Roots

Georgios Papandreou was born on June 16, 1952, in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, to Andreas Papandreou, the charismatic founder and leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). Georgios' grandfather, also named Georgios Papandreou, served as Prime Minister of the Greek exile government in 1944 and later as Prime Minister in post-war Greece for many years.

Education and Language Skills

Papandreou's father's academic career took the family to Canada, the United States, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, where Papandreou received his education. He became fluent in English and Swedish.

Early Political Involvement

From a young age, Papandreou became actively involved in PASOK, the party founded by his father. He was elected to the Greek Parliament in 1981 and subsequently held various ministerial positions, including Foreign Minister.
