Early Life and Education

Georgi Atanasov was born in Bulgaria and graduated from the University of Sofia in 1956.

Political Career

Member of the Bulgarian Communist Party

Atanasov joined the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP) and held various roles within the organization. He rose through the ranks and became a prominent figure in the party.

Premiership

In 1986, Atanasov served as the Prime Minister of Bulgaria for the 74th government. He held the position for only a brief period before being re-appointed in 1986 as Prime Minister for the 75th government, serving until 1990.

Downfall and Legal Troubles

Dismissal from the Socialist Party

In 1990, Atanasov was removed from all his positions within the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), the successor to the BCP.

Conviction and Pardon

In 1992, Atanasov was sentenced to ten years in prison for financial misconduct. However, in 1994, he received a presidential pardon and was released from prison.
