Biography of Georgiy Shcherbakov

Georgiy Kuzmich Shcherbakov was born on May 5, 1925, in the village of Krasnodon, into a working-class family. After completing three years of primary school at School No. 25, he transferred to Secondary School No. 22. In 1939, he became an apprentice in the foundry workshop of Electrical and Mechanical Workshops No. 2 in Krasnodon, and from 1940, he worked as a molder while continuing his studies at evening school. Georgiy was fascinated by his specialization, particularly observing how metal takes on a specific shape. In his free time, he even crafted an ashtray, which is now exhibited in the "Young Guard" museum.

Member of the Underground Organization "Young Guard"

In October 1942, Georgiy Shcherbakov joined a group of underground fighters in the village of Krasnodon and later became a member of the underground Komsomol organization called "Young Guard." Together with his comrades, he actively participated in combat operations against the occupiers. In order to avoid being forcibly taken to Germany, he found employment at Mine No. 17. There, he conducted anti-fascist propaganda among the miners, encouraged sabotage and subversion, provided information about the front-line situation, and rendered mining equipment inoperative.

Capture and Execution

In December, the group of Young Guards, including Georgiy, organized the escape of several prisoners of war who were being transported by the Nazis and temporarily housed in School No. 22. In the first half of January 1943, arrests began in the village. Georgiy's sister, Aleksandra Kuzminichna, recalls that she, fearing for her brother's fate, immediately suggested that he go into hiding, but he replied, "No, I can't. I will be where my comrades are." On January 12, he was arrested, subjected to brutal torture, and two days later, sent to the city of Krasnodon. On the night of January 16, executioners executed Georgiy near the shaft of Mine No. 5. He was buried in the mass grave of the Young Guards in the center of Krasnodon.
