Pyotr Lapshov: Hero of the Soviet Union
Early Life and Military ServicePyotr Lapshov was born into a peasant family in the village of Musorka. After completing his education, he worked as a tractor driver on a collective farm. Despite being granted an exemption from military service due to his skills, Lapshov joined the front lines in December 1942 as an artilleryman.
Heroic Exploits During the War
As a gunner in the 1326th Light Artillery Regiment, Lapshov distinguished himself in the battles for Smolensk. In one daring mission, he led his crew in a daring assault behind enemy lines, firing their cannon from a railway tunnel. Later, while commanding his gun crew, he held off enemy advances for two days, allowing Soviet troops to retreat. Despite losing their messenger and running out of ammunition, Lapshov's crew destroyed several German tanks and vehicles.
Escape and Recognition
After the battle, Lapshov and his crew escaped on foot, carrying their cannon through treacherous forest trails and eventually crossing a river. Despite being wounded, Lapshov later learned that they had been presumed dead. For his actions, Lapshov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and his crew members received orders.
Post-War Life and Legacy
After the war, Lapshov settled in Kuibyshev and worked as a watchmaker. His bravery and sacrifice are honored through the naming of streets in his hometown and in the city of Tolyatti.
