Premier Minister and Legal Scholar
Dr. Hans Brunhart is a distinguished Liechtenstein politician, legal scholar, and former Prime Minister of Liechtenstein. His academic pursuits led him to attain a doctorate in law from the University of Fribourg in 1957.
Early Career
Concurrently with his political endeavors, Brunhart practiced law and worked as a publicist from 1956 to 1962. He held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Municipality of Eschen from 1960 to 1962.
Prime Minister of Liechtenstein
From 1962 to 1970, Brunhart served as both Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Principality of Liechtenstein. His tenure marked a significant period in the country's history.
Legal and Political Career
After his time as Prime Minister, Brunhart returned to the legal profession, practicing as an attorney from 1970 to 1974. He then resumed his involvement in politics, serving as a member of the Liechtenstein Landtag (parliament) from 1974 to 1982. During this period, he held several high-ranking positions, including President of the Landtag (1974-1978) and Vice-President of the Landtag (1978-1981).
International Roles
Brunhart's contributions extended beyond Liechtenstein's borders. He served as Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from 1981 to 1982. He also held the position of Member of the European Commission on Human Rights from 1983 to 1990 and Member of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) from 1991 to 2003.
Scholarly Pursuits
Brunhart has made significant contributions to the legal scholarship of Liechtenstein. Since 1987, he has been a member of the Scientific Council of the Liechtenstein Institute, serving as its Chairman from 1987 to 1997. Additionally, he has been a Judge of the OSCE Court of Arbitration since 1995. Brunhart has authored numerous books and articles focusing on the legal system of Liechtenstein.
