Early Life and Education
Gesine Lötzsch was born in East Germany in 1961. She completed her secondary education in 1980 and went on to study at the University of Berlin. In 1985, she obtained a teaching diploma in English and German. She continued her studies at the university, completing her doctorate in 1988.
Political Career
Lötzsch became politically active in 1984 when she joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). She served as a member of the Lichtenberg district council from 1989 to 1990 and the East Berlin city council from May to December 1990. In 1991, she became the leader of the PDS faction and held various positions within the party's leadership until 2002.
Lötzsch was elected to the Bundestag in 2002 and has held several positions within the parliamentary group of the Left Party. She has been Vice-Chair of the party's faction since 2005 and has led the faction in various committees.
Party Leadership
In 2010, Lötzsch and Klaus Ernst were elected Co-Chairs of the Left Party. However, Lötzsch resigned from her position in 2012 due to her husband's illness.
Controversy
In 2012, it was revealed that Lötzsch and 27 other Left Party Bundestag members were under surveillance by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. This sparked widespread criticism from all factions in the Bundestag.
Current Position
Lötzsch was elected Chair of the Bundestag's Budget Committee in 2014. She remains an active member of the Left Party and a prominent figure in German politics.
Personal Life
Lötzsch is married to linguist Ronald Lötzsch, and they have two children.
