Early Life and Education
Giacomo Matteotti was an accomplished lawyer who graduated from the University of Bologna. During World War I, he actively opposed the war, leading to his arrest and imprisonment.
Political Career
In 1919, Matteotti entered politics and became a member of the Italian Socialist Party. However, in October 1922, he, Filippo Turati, and other reformists were expelled from the party and went on to establish the Unitary Socialist Party.
Unitary Socialist Party
Within the Unitary Socialist Party, Matteotti served as its political secretary. Unlike many reformists, he advocated for forceful resistance against fascism. In 1924, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, where he denounced the electoral fraud and abuses committed by the fascist party.
Anti-Fascist Campaign
On May 30, 1924, Matteotti courageously exposed the fascist regime's corruption and demanded the annulment of fascist deputies' mandates. He continued preparing further revelations, posing a significant threat to the stability of Benito Mussolini's regime.
Assassination and Aftermath
On June 10, 1924, Matteotti was abducted and brutally murdered by fascist thugs. His assassination plunged the fascist regime into a deep crisis. Representatives from non-fascist parties abandoned Parliament, forming the Aventine Secession.
Legacy
Matteotti's death shocked the nation and challenged the authority of Mussolini. According to Giacomo Lauri-Volpi in his book "Vocal Parallels," Matteotti was related to the renowned operatic tenor, Titta Ruffo. Matteotti's legacy continues to inspire resistance movements against tyranny and democratic values.
