Early Life and AmbitionsLeka Zogu, the 63-year-old son of the last Albanian king, has long harbored dreams of restoring the monarchy in his homeland. In 1997, he organized a referendum on the issue, but the results were disappointing: 67% of Albanians opted for a republic.
Failed Referendum and Controversies
Undeterred, Zogu accused the government of rigging the vote and staged a protest in Tirana, leading a crowd while armed with a pistol and grenades. He was subsequently expelled from the country and later sentenced in absentia to two years in prison for attempted rebellion. The Supreme Court eventually overturned the sentence.
Return to Albania
In June 2021, Zogu permanently relocated to Albania from South Africa. However, his return was marred by a scandal at Tirana Airport, where police discovered an arsenal of weapons and ammunition in his luggage. The incident was reportedly hushed up.
Albania's Brief Monarchy
Albania's monarchy existed for only 11 years. In 1928, wealthy landowner Zogu, who had been elected president of the newly independent Albania, proclaimed himself king. In 1939, Italy invaded and occupied Albania, forcing Zogu and his family to flee the country.
Post-War Developments
After the war, a communist government was established in Albania, and the monarchy was abolished. The country remained a socialist state until the 1990s, when it transitioned to a parliamentary republic.
Zogu's Continued Advocacy
Despite the referendum results and the country's history, Zogu continues to advocate for the restoration of the monarchy. He believes that a constitutional monarchy could provide stability and continuity in Albania. Whether his aspirations will ever be realized remains to be seen.
