Early Life and Skating CareerGilllis Grafström, a Swedish figure skater, was born in 1893. He developed a passion for ice skating at a young age and began competing professionally in the early 1910s.
Olympic Triumphs
Grafström achieved unprecedented success at the Olympic Games, winning three gold medals in 1920, 1924, and 1928. In 1932, he narrowly missed a fourth gold by finishing second to Karl Schäfer.
Artistic Brilliance
Grafström was renowned for his exquisite skating technique and artistic interpretations of music. He invented the Grafström Pirouette and the Flying Sit Spin, which became cornerstones of the sport.
Post-Skating Endeavors
After retiring from competitive skating, Grafström became a successful architect, graduating from Berlin's Technische Hochschule. He also pursued writing and engraving.
Art Collection and Legacy
Grafström was an avid collector of artwork depicting ice skating. His vast collection, which included graphics, paintings, and sculptures, was continued by his wife, Cecilie Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Today, this collection resides in the World Figure Skating Museum in Colorado Springs, USA.
Final Years and Recognition
Grafström spent the latter part of his life in Germany, where he passed away in 1938 at the age of 44. A street in Potsdam, Germany, is named in his honor, and he was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1976. His legacy as one of the greatest figure skaters of all time continues to inspire future generations.
