Gina McCarthy: Environmental Protection Pioneer
Gina McCarthy is a renowned advocate for environmental protection. Her distinguished career spans decades of leadership in state and federal agencies, culminating in her appointment as the 13th Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during the Obama administration.
Early Education and Environmental Advocacy
Born into a Catholic family of Irish descent, McCarthy earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1976. Her passion for the environment led her to pursue a Master of Science in Environmental Planning and Policy from Tufts University in 1981.
State Government Leadership
McCarthy's career in environmental policy began in 1999 as an Assistant Secretary at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs. She held subsequent roles as Deputy Director of the Massachusetts Office of Commonwealth Development and Deputy Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.
EPA Administrator
In 2009, McCarthy was appointed Deputy Administrator of the EPA. Upon the resignation of her predecessor, Lisa Jackson, in 2013, McCarthy became the acting head of the agency. On July 18, 2013, the U.S. Senate confirmed her nomination as EPA Administrator by a vote of 59-40.
During her tenure as Administrator, McCarthy faced scrutiny over the lead contamination crisis in Flint, Michigan. Despite the controversy, she remained steadfast in her commitment to protecting public health and the environment.
Post-EPA Leadership
In 2018, the Harvard School of Public Health established the Center for Climate, Health, and Global Environment, with McCarthy as its founding Director. In 2019, she was appointed President and CEO of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), where she continues to advocate for environmental sustainability.
Personal Life
McCarthy is married to Kenneth McCarey, a wholesale florist. They have three adult children. In 2015, McCarthy visited the Vatican to convey President Obama's support for Pope Francis's advocacy for addressing climate change.
