Giorgio Di Centa
Early Career and World Cup DebutBorn in Predazzo, Italy, on February 7, 1972, Giorgio Di Centa began his skiing career at a young age. The younger brother of renowned Italian skier Manuela Di Centa, Giorgio made his World Cup debut in 1993. His first victory on the World Cup circuit came in March 2002, and he has since amassed six stage wins, one in individual races and five in team events. His best overall World Cup finish was fifth place in the 2007/08 season.
Olympic Glory in Turin
Di Centa made his Olympic debut in 1998 in Nagano, where he placed eighth in the 30 km classical race. At the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, he claimed a silver medal in the relay and finished fourth in the 10+10 km duathlon, 11th in the 50 km classical, and 35th in the 15 km classical.
His crowning achievement came at the 2006 Turin Olympics, where he captured two gold medals in the relay and 50 km race. He also placed fourth in the 15+15 km duathlon and ninth in the team sprint.
Later Career and Retirement
At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Di Centa finished 10th in the 15 km freestyle, 12th in the 15+15 km duathlon, ninth in the relay, and 11th in the 50 km mass start.
He participated in his final Olympics in 2014 in Sochi, placing 11th in the 15+15 km skiathlon and fifth in the 4x10 km relay with Team Italy.
In addition to his Olympic success, Di Centa won a silver and three bronze medals at the World Championships. He also claimed two gold medals at the 2007 World Roller Ski Championships.
Personal Life and Legacy
Di Centa retired from skiing in 2017 at the age of 44. Throughout his career, he used Atomic skis, Salomon boots, and bindings. He is married with four children, including his daughter Martina, who is a member of the Italian national ski team.
Di Centa served as a member of the Italian police force and has accomplishments in mountaineering. His cousin, Venanzio Ortis, was a track and field athlete who competed in the 5000 meters at the 1976 Olympics.
