Giovanni Arrighi was an influential Italian economist and sociologist, renowned for his contributions to the field of world-system analysis.

Early Life and Education

Arrighi was born into a family of Swiss bankers and Milanese merchants. He pursued a degree in economics at Bocconi University in Milan, graduating in 1960.

International Experience

In 1963, Arrighi embarked on an international journey, starting as a lecturer at the University of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). From 1966, he taught at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Return to Italy and Academic Career

Arrighi returned to Italy in 1969 and became a professor of sociology at the University of Calabria (Cosenza) in 1973. He made significant scholarly contributions during this period.

Collaboration with Immanuel Wallerstein

In 1979, Arrighi joined the Fernand Braudel Center at the State University of New York at Binghamton, founded by Immanuel Wallerstein, a luminary in world-systems theory. Their collaboration furthered the development of this field.

Appointment to Johns Hopkins University

In 1998, Arrighi was appointed professor at Johns Hopkins University, where he continued his groundbreaking research and teaching until his passing.
