Early Life and Education

Giovanni Capis was born in Milan, Lombardy, Italy. He pursued studies in philology at the University of Milan.

Linguistic Contributions

In his early years, Capis compiled the first dictionary of the Lombard dialect of Italian, titled "Varon Milanes" (1606). This groundbreaking work, also known as "Varon milanes de la lengua da Milan e Prissian da Milan de la parnonzia milanesa," introduced the concept of a standardized Lombard language.

The "Memorie della Corte di Mattarella"

Capis's second major work was "Memorie della Corte di Mattarella," a chronicle of the history of the Ossola region. Completed in 1631, it was posthumously published by his son Giovanni Matteo Capis in 1673. This detailed historical account has been widely referenced and periodically republished, with the latest edition appearing in 2002.

Collaborations and Editing

Capis's "Varon Milanes" was co-authored with Giovanni Ambrogio Biffi, using the pseudonym "Prissian da Milan." The work was later edited by the renowned monk and scholar Igaazio Albani, providing further academic rigor.

Legacy and Recognition

Giovanni Capis is regarded as a significant figure in Italian philology and historical research. His contributions to the study of Lombard dialect and the history of Ossola have earned him a lasting legacy in these fields.
