Early Life and Career

Giirts Valdis Kristovskiswas born in Riga, Latvia in 1961. He earned a degree in law from the University of Latvia and began his political career in the late 1980s. In 1989, he was elected to the Riga and Ventspils City Councils.

Member of Parliament and Government Positions

In 1993, Kristovskis became a member of the Supreme Council of Latvia. He was subsequently elected to five terms in the Saeima, Latvia's parliament. During his time in the government, he held several cabinet positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs (2004-2006), Minister of Defense (2006-2007), and Minister of Internal Affairs (2007-2008).

Political Affiliation and Activities

Kristovskis is the Chairman of the Unity and the New Conservative Party. He is a co-founder of the "Club-21," a political group dedicated to promoting Latvian independence. Kristovskis also served as a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009.

Controversies

In 2004, Kristovskis was involved in a controversy after leaked emails revealed his support for anti-Russian views. The emails, which were published online, contained his agreement with a doctor who stated that "he could not treat Russians the same way as Latvians." Kristovskis subsequently apologized for his comments.

Kristovskis is a skilled athlete who holds a Master's degree in javelin throw. He is the President of the Latvian Athletics Federation and a member of the Latvian Olympic Committee. He is also married to actress Ilze Rudolfa.
