Early Life and Education
Giselle Fernandez was born in Mexico City, Mexico, on May 15, 1961. Her father was a flamenco dancer, and her mother was an Ashkenazi Jewish student of Mexican folklore. When Fernandez was four years old, her family moved to the United States. She attended the University of Sacramento and graduated in 1982.
Early Career
Fernandez began her television career in 1983 at KRDO in Pueblo, Colorado. From 1985 to 1989, she worked as a reporter and anchor for KTLA in Los Angeles, WBBM in Chicago, and WCIX in Miami. In 1988, she was arrested in Chicago while on a boat with John Cappas, who was subsequently arrested for drug trafficking. Fernandez was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Tragedy and Recovery
While in Chicago, Fernandez met and became engaged to Ron Kershaw, who died of pancreatic and liver cancer. A month after Kershaw's death, Fernandez's father passed away from Alzheimer's disease. Despite these tragedies, Fernandez persevered and continued her journalism career.
National News Career
In 1991, Fernandez joined CBS News and moved to New York City. She worked as a correspondent and substitute anchor for the morning, evening, and weekend news. She later joined NBC, where she co-hosted "Today" on weekends, anchored "NBC Nightly News" on Sundays, and was a correspondent.
Later Career and Philanthropy
From 1996 to 1999, Fernandez co-hosted "Access Hollywood" on NBC. She then co-hosted "This Week in History" on the History Channel. In 2002, she returned to KTLA in Los Angeles and worked as a news anchor. In 2003, she left KTLA to pursue various projects, including writing children's books and dancing on "Dancing with the Stars" in 2006.
Fernandez has received five Emmy Awards for her journalism career. She has also been active in several charitable organizations, and in 2006, she was named "Outstanding Philanthropist" by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
