Giulia Bongiorno: A Formidable Advocate and Politician
Early Life and EducationGiulia Bongiorno was born in Palermo on March 22, 1966, to Girolamo Bongiorno, a professor of Civil Procedure Law. After graduating from the University of Palermo Faculty of Law with a thesis on bankrupt assets, she specialized in criminal law in 1992.
Legal Career
Bongiorno gained prominence in 1995 by joining the legal team of Giulio Andreotti, who faced allegations of mafia connections. In 2002, she established her own law firm.
Political Journey
From 2006 to 2013, Bongiorno served as a member of Parliament for the 15th and 16th legislatures, representing the National Alliance, People of Freedom, and Future and Freedom for the Third Pole factions.
In 2012, she represented 67 Italian and German citizens affected by the Costa Concordia disaster. She was also elected to the board of directors of Juventus Football Club in the same year.
Government Service
Following the 2018 elections, Bongiorno became the only Lega Nord candidate to be elected to the Senate from Sicily. On June 1, 2018, she assumed the role of Minister without Portfolio for Public Administration in Giuseppe Conte's first government.
When Conte formed his second government on September 4, 2019, Bongiorno was not re-appointed as Minister for Public Administration.
Post-Governmental Activities
On October 3, 2020, Bongiorno represented Matteo Salvini in the "Gregoretti case" in Catania, involving accusations against Salvini for prohibiting rescued immigrants from disembarking in Italy. During the trial, a 50-kilogram marble slab fell from a courthouse wall, injuring Bongiorno, who required medical attention.
