Glafcos Clerides: A Statesman's Legacy
Early Life and EducationGlafcos Clerides, born on April 24, 1919, in Nicosia, Cyprus, embarked on an illustrious career that would shape the nation's history. After graduating from London University with degrees in philosophy and law, he served in the Royal Air Force during World War II.
Advocate for Cyprus' Independence
Clerides returned to Cyprus in 1951 and established a successful legal practice. His passion for his homeland's liberation from British rule led him to actively participate in the nationalist movement. He served as Minister of Justice in the Provisional Government of Cyprus from 1959 to 1960.
Political Leadership
In 1961, Clerides became the President of the House of Representatives, a position he held until 1976. During this period, he led the right-wing United Party of National Thinking, which later became known as the Democratic Rally.
In 1974, Clerides briefly served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Interior during a turbulent time in Cyprus' history. He unsuccessfully ran for president in the elections of 1983 and 1988.
Presidency
On February 13, 1993, Clerides was elected President of Cyprus after a hard-fought campaign. He served two consecutive terms, from 1993 to 2003. During his presidency, he pursued a policy of reunification with the Turkish-controlled northern Cyprus. He also played a pivotal role in Cyprus' accession to the European Union.
Legacy
Glaphos Clerides retired from politics in 2003, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a statesman who fought for the independence and unity of his country. He passed away on November 15, 2013, at the age of 94.
