Gloria La Riva: A Lifetime of Political Activism
Gloria La Riva is a prolific American political candidate and communist activist who has run for office multiple times on the platforms of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and the Peace and Freedom Party (PFP).
Early Life and Activism
Gloria La Riva was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on August 13, 1954. She began attending Brandeis University in 1972 after completing high school. La Riva became involved in left-wing politics and joined the World Workers' Party. In 1984, she was the vice-presidential candidate for the Workers World Party.
Presidential Campaigns
La Riva has run for the presidency of the United States as a third-party candidate multiple times. She ran on the World Workers' Party ticket in 1992 and on the PSL ticket in 2008, 2016, and 2020. In 2016, her running mate was Eugene Puryear, and in 2020, her running mate was Sunil Freeman.
Other Political Positions
In addition to her presidential campaigns, La Riva has campaigned for various other offices. She has run for governor of California on the PFP ticket in 1994 and 1998. She has also run for the San Francisco mayoral seat (1983 and 1991) and for the U.S. Congress (2010).
Political Affiliations
La Riva is a co-founder of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five.
Honors and Recognition
In 2010, La Riva was awarded the Medal of Friendship by the Council of State of Cuba.
Personal Life
Gloria La Riva is married to Richard Becker, whose brother, Brian Becker, is a co-founder of the PSL.
