Early Life and NobilityBorn in Cabra, Córdoba, Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba was the third son of Antonio Fernández de Córdoba Cardona y Requesens, 5th Duke of Sessa and a prominent member of the House of Great Captain. Gonzalo was a direct descendant of the renowned Renaissance general Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, known as the Great Captain, earning him the nickname "Second Great Captain."
Military Career
Gonzalo distinguished himself in the Spanish military hierarchy, serving in the Eighty Years' War, the Thirty Years' War, and the War of the Mantuan Succession. He attained the rank of captain general and was bestowed the title of Prince of Maratea in 1624, a principality in the Kingdom of Naples.
Military Accomplishments
Gonzalo commanded Spanish troops in several notable battles, including Wimpfen, Fleurus, and Höchst. He led successful sieges of Heidelberg and Bacharach during his service in the Palatinate and Flanders from 1621 to 1623. From 1625 to 1629, he served as governor of Milan during the War of the Mantuan Succession.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1632, Gonzalo was sent to the Netherlands, where he commanded Spanish forces against the Prince of Orange. He returned to Spain in 1633 and spent his remaining years in Montalbán until his death in 1635. He passed away unmarried and without direct descendants.
