Biography of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is a Nigerian politician and the current President of Nigeria. He was born in Otueke, Ogbia, Eastern Region. His family was involved in canoe production. Jonathan obtained a Bachelor's degree in Zoology, a Master's degree in Hydrobiology and Fisheries, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Port Harcourt.

After completing his education, Jonathan worked in the education sector, lecturing and inspecting educational institutions, as well as working on environmental protection. In 1998, he decided to enter politics and joined the People's Democratic Party (PDP). He became the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State and later assumed the position of Governor after the former governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was removed from office due to allegations of money laundering in the United Kingdom.

In December 2006, Jonathan ran for the presidency against Umaru Yar'Adua. During his campaign, he survived two assassination attempts. After Yar'Adua's victory, Jonathan opened up about his assets, revealing a balance of $8,569,662.4 as of May 30, 2007.

In November 2009, Yar'Adua left Nigeria for medical treatment, leaving no clear instructions for his successor. On January 13, 2010, a federal court granted Jonathan the authority to govern while Yar'Adua was undergoing treatment. The Supreme Court later ruled that the Federal Executive Council should determine whether Yar'Adua was incapacitated. On February 9, the Senate decided to transfer power to Jonathan, making him the acting President.

Jonathan is married to Patience Faka Jonathan, and they have two children. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria's national team failed to advance past the group stage. Jonathan initially banned the team from international competitions, but after FIFA threatened to suspend Nigeria, he reversed the decision.

As President, Jonathan faced numerous challenges, including security issues, corruption, and economic difficulties. He sought re-election in 2015 but was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari. Despite the loss, Jonathan remains an influential figure in Nigerian politics.
